Hapi (Ancient Egyptian: ḥʿpy) was the god of the

annual flooding of the Nile in ancient Egyptian

religion. The flood deposited rich silt (fertile soil)

on the river's banks, allowing the Egyptians to

grow crops.[1] Hapi was greatly celebrated among

the Egyptians. He is commonly depicted with the

head of a hamadryas baboon, and is tasked with

protecting the lungs of the deceased, hence the

common depiction of a hamadryas baboon head

sculpted as the lid of the canopic jar that held the

lungs.
